I Know We Should made a recent trek across the Big Apple to Chelsea Studios NYC to capture this session with West Texas troubadours and certified Humble Folks, Flatland Cavalry. The group — Cleto Cordero (vocals, guitar), Reid Dillon (dobro, guitar), Wesley Hall (fiddle), Adam Gallegos (mandolin, guitar) and Jason Albers (drums, not seen here) — have been on a tear recently, racking up three consecutive nominations for Group Of The Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards in between slots on the road opening for the likes of Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Lainey Wilson and Kacey Musgraves.
In fact, it was Musgraves whom the band was on the road with during a stop at Madison Square Garden on her Middle Of Nowhere tour when it joined us to record three songs from their fifth studio album Work Of Heart - Heartstrings. The first of those wistful and reflective missives is “Hard Lessons” from the project’s refurbished deluxe edition, which charts the rebirth of someone from an ego death that had them “making friends with seasonal depression” and “trading curses for blessings” en route to rolling back what they thought they knew of others, the world, and even themselves.
Speaking of shelving preconceived notions, a similar sentiment flowed through the band’s next song at Chelsea Studios NYC, “Bird’s Eye View”, as well. The upbeat banger sees Cordero jubilantly ruminating about the unpredictability of love and how its mountainous highs will give you a little buzz that “will get your mind off the crash." Finally, Flatland closes out the session with the final track from the Work Of Heart’s deluxe edition, “One More Song”. The song is a poignant and uplifting ballad that highlights the power of music in bringing people together through good times, bad, joy, turmoil, loss, grief. Music has a way of speaking to and uniting people in ways that few other things can, and with “One More Song” Flatland harken back to their 2016 debut Humble Folks with this gentle reminder of that universal strength and connectedness.
Stay up-to-date on the band’s upcoming tour dates, new music and other announcements at FlatlandCavalry.com. Additionally, keep your eyes peeled for more I Know We Should sessions in the days ahead as well.
