Grace Potter
This was objectively the correct way to spend an afternoon with Grace Potter and her new album Trespasser about refusing to stay inside the lines. Potter joined us at Lucinda’s NYC in the East Village to play two songs from the record, she also ate a glorious bagel, talked about neurological ruts, compared herself to the Kool-Aid Man, and never once considered staying within the lines.
Trespasser is built around the idea of crossing the boundaries we’ve constructed for ourselves, the “no trespassing” signs we’ve internalized, the stories we’ve told ourselves so many times that they become, as Potter puts it, “neurological ruts.” She wanted these songs to explore what happens when you cross to the other side of those “no trespassing” signs, referencing a verse from Woody Guthrie's “This Land Is Your Land”:
As I went walking, I saw a sign there /
And on the sign it said ‘No Trespassing’ /
But on the other side it didn't say nothing /
That side was made for you and me
When Potter met us at Lucinda’s, she trespassed the shit out of the conventions of on-camera interviews by crushing a Tompkins Square Bagels everything bagel with cream cheese while we talked.
She was in the home stretch of a long press day that had started with an appearance on one of the morning shows at an inhumane hour, running from one thing to the next, when we met at Lu's.
At first, the idea of eating an everything bagel with cream cheese during the interview came up as a joke. IKWS firmly believes that there are no rules to any of this, and if Grace Potter feels comfortable smashing NYC's messiest bagel on camera, then who are we to blow against the wind? The bagel became part of the conversation, part of the performance, and somehow part of the philosophy of the record itself.
